How to extend the service life of your overhead conveyor: best practices that make a difference

If you have Erzinger conveyors in your painting line, you know that they are essential for the continuous and efficient operation of the process. Responsible for moving parts through each stage, from pre-treatment to curing, this equipment requires specific care to ensure durability, safety, and productivity.

With this in mind, we have compiled some fundamental best practices for those who want to get the most out of their conveyor and extend the service life of the conveyor chain.

1. Proper lubrication is essential

Chains operate under high temperature conditions, especially in ovens. Therefore, lubrication with specific high-temperature oil is essential. The amount must also be carefully adjusted:

    • Excess can contaminate the parts;
    • Absence accelerates wear and tear.

The pneumatic lubricator must be adjusted according to working time, temperature, line speed, and environmental conditions. There is an inspection window to check that the lubricant is being applied correctly.

    2. Avoid stopping the chain inside the hot oven

The current must continue to flow until the greenhouse reaches 80°C (standard shutdown temperature). Stopping before this can cause:

      • Excessive evaporation of lubricant
      • Unnecessary exposure of parts to heat
      • Damage to the chain and need for rework

      3. Respect the load limit and spacing between hooks

Standard model chains support 110 kg/m, with a maximum load of 90 kg per point. Following these specifications helps prevent excessive wear and unplanned downtime.

      4. Wash the chain periodically

Over time, dust, paint residue, and degraded lubricant accumulate on the chain, compromising lubrication and contaminating parts. The recommendation is to clean the chain every 6 months to 1 year, using high-pressure equipment and a degreasing solution.

This procedure is performed by our Customer Service team using specific equipment.

      5. Only reverse the flow if necessary

Although the reverse command exists, it should only be used in:

        • Emergency cases
        • Maintenance
        • Stops along the way

Reversing the direction outside of these situations can cause chain jams and damage to the pneumatic tensioning system.

        6. Keep all components adjusted

The proper functioning of the conveyor depends on the correct adjustment of its main systems:

          • Pneumatic Lubricator: ensures precise lubrication of moving parts
          • Pneumatic Tensioner: keeps the chain tensioned (recommended setting between 2 and 4 bar — varies depending on layout)
          • Traction device: moves the chain safely and stably

Good practices that make a difference

At Erzinger, we offer comprehensive technical support to ensure that your equipment operates at peak performance. Our team is ready to provide guidance, make adjustments, and perform specialized services, such as technical chain cleaning.
